Planetary Ball Mill PM 200

The Retsch high-speed Planetary Ball Mill PM 200 grinds and mixes soft, medium-hard and even extremely hard, brittle and fibrous materials. The PM 200 is a dual-station unit suitable for jars from 12 ml to 125 ml. Both wet and dry grinding is possible. The Planetary Ball Mill can be used successfully in almost every field of industry and research, particularly where the requirements for purity, speed, reproducibility and fineness are very high.

The Planetary Ball Mill produces extremely high centrifugal forces with very high pulverization energies which results in short grinding times.

Functions

The grinding jar rotates about its own axis and, in the opposite direction, around the common axis of the sun wheel. The superimposition of the centrifugal forces produces grinding ball movements with a high pulverization energy. The centrifugal forces acting on the grinding jar wall initially carry the grinding balls in the direction in which the grinding jar is rotating. Differences occur between the speed of the grinding jar wall and the balls; this results in strong frictional forces acting on the sample. As the rotational movement increases, Coriolis forces act on the balls to displace them from the grinding jar walls. The balls fly through the grinding jar interior and impact against the sample on the opposite grinding jar wall. This releases considerable dynamic impact energy. The combination of the frictional forces and impact forces causes the high degree of size reduction of planetary ball mills.
